Current Events: Music File Sharing (10 points)

Here is a partial transcript of yesterday's current events story on music file sharing. Reread it, and then make a blog entry expressing your opinion on this issue. Is this a real problem? What should be done? This blog entry is worth 10 points, so please treat it like a regular classroom assignment and write in complete sentences, proofreading what you say before posting.

CNN TRANSCRIPT: When you hear a new song you like, you might hop online to get it. But how you download is important. Almost 8 million homes use file-sharing programs, but the American recording industry says those programs are illegal, and last week, a federal jury agreed. It ordered a Minnesota woman to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for sharing copyrighted music online.

File-sharing has been in the news for years, partly because it's so widespread. We know where the people who do it stand, and we know where the record industry stands. But what about you?

I think it's bad that you can't share music files with anybody. You can't even share with your family and that will get extremely exspensive.

i think that the girl shouldnt get fined

I think that the things that are happening throughout the world with overpopulation will cause more deaths and i think it isn't very good

Anonymous said...

Why would they put the downloading sites on there if they were illegal?

Anonymous said...

Yeh. She didn't really know what was going on. She had no clue that it was a bad thing! They should still fine her, but not 222k, thats ridiculous! ust fien her like 1k, as a warning, so she wont do it agin

Anonymous said...

christian, why do you think she should get fined? Lots of people share music files. Do you think they should get fined also?

Anonymous said...

I think that it is unfair that they are fining the girl because she should be able to share the music she downloaded with anybody she wants.

Anonymous said...

File sharing should be allowed. It costs money to get a song, so why cant they share to make the cost less? Unless the program that they were using was illegal... That changes it, but I'm not too sure...

ummmmmmmmmm.........I dont know wat to say

Anonymous said...

I think the lady should take a lie detector test and see if she did put the files on her computer

Anonymous said...

Kiara, christian said that he thoght that the girl SHOULDNT get find and i agree with him.

Anonymous said...

i agree on all of the comments so far

Anonymous said...

It's stupid

Anonymous said...

I think that she should be fined because it is her fault

Anonymous said...

Wow, nick nice coment. do they even make lie dectectors? If they do then I totally agree.

Anonymous said...

the recored companies have plenty of money already. people should be aloud to file share as long as the music was bought and not stolen. the music companies are being greedy. they just want to make a load of extra cash. they only think about business.

Anonymous said...

I partly agree with mckenzie. That if they were going to fine her that she should only get a warning. I mean, having her pay for that kind of thing is crazy.

Anonymous said...

I think it's bad to download music illegally because the producers are losing money for the song they made

Anonymous said...

sorry christian i read it to fast. sorry.

Mrs.Keith,
about the girl who has to pay thousands of dollars is crazy i didn't understand about why she has to so pay that much.

Anonymous said...

I think that have company's should not put them up on the internet.

I think that have company's should not put them up on the internet.

Anonymous said...

That lady is really fighting to not pay that fine. Maybe she didn't do that and someone else did. I dont know but i don't think that she should be fined.

Anonymous said...

I think the person should get fined but I also think that it shouldn't be just her. A lot of people do what she did and they don't get caught. She shouldn't be made an example.

i agrre with austin

I think that the recording industry just wants money.Whats the point of buying a new CD for $15.00 when you could just download it off the internet?Lots of people share files,so you cant just pick someone and fine them hundrerds of thosands of dollars, its completely unfair

Anonymous said...

I also agree with Zoe.

Anonymous said...

I think the girl should not be fined because she is making money on the and if people are buying the song from her. The people who bought the song from her should get fined.

Anonymous said...

I think that it is wrong for all of the millions of people who download illegally, but the government shouldn't have just fine one person. They should have fined all of the people who downloaded illegally in some way.

Anonymous said...

i wouldnt want to pay any fines for sharing musicand I dont think that she should have to pay any fines because its not like it is actually hurting someone

Anonymous said...

dakotai woudnt want to pay any fines for sharing music files. She shouldnt ethier because she didnt event or think of it,so they should sew the company instead of her

Anonymous said...

I think that she should not be charged with music file sharing because she didn't do something that the court said she did down loaded a song and she did not

Anonymous said...

I think she should be fined because the files were on her computer, so she must have had something to do with it, other wise they wouldn't be there! I wonder if people who download illegally know that they are doing it, because if they do, they should be charged with theft. It's like the same -- you're taking something without paying for it. But in this case it's not material, it's just sound.

Anonymous said...

why pick one person to pick on and have pay $200,000 not shouting down the website.

Anonymous said...

the

Anonymous said...

I agree with Kyla and Spencer N.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the lady should have to pay a.Fine because theres a lot of teens and.Adults that download sites because they don't have to pay. They can put anything on the internet.

Anonymous said...

I know about 10 people how file share me being one of them I still pay but my hole famly pays to.

i think it s rather weird that they fined a person using a ilegal website, and no the website. If u want people to stop using illegil programs like file sharing just sue the website! seriously like Bear Share, LIme Wire, Fox spot, tambuda's corner, sly fox tv, and a lot more.. just sue the company. there is also some companys that pay for u to file share like frost Wire, it is like lime wire but it isnt't illegal.. because lime wire got sued but they couldnt shut down the program because if they did.. they would get sued by a bunch of poeple because it losses all the music u had.. so lime wire wasnt able to shut down the program because so many people downloaded it to their computers... th poeple that made lime wire made frost wire.. becasue they wanted to say srry to the govern ment and the people that were using lime wire.. they pay the government $2 per person who is using frost wire... the girl shoudn't get fined because there is still like 1000,000,00000,0000,000 people using it ...like EVERYONE........ even if she did get fined it hould be reduced becasue it is way to high for what she only did.. like bear share they put out movies that are in theaters..they send there employes to movies and they take video cameras with them to film it, then they download it on the site then like evryone can see it for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I think it's not good to share music files with anybody.

Anonymous said...

Someone had to have bought the CD to share it,so whats the big deal? there not stealing, they're just sharing and since when has sharing been bad?

Anonymous said...

I think it's really stupid because there are so many people who use websites to download music for free. There are also a lot of illegal websites like Sly fox tv,limewire, and bear share. Why don't the just track down the people who made the websites because the people who download is not there fault because they don't know.
Since our technology is so huge why don't they track down the makers and take the fine away from that girl.Seriously that girl should not get fined. So the stupid website owner people should get those stupid websites if they have such a big problem with them. It Is Unfair

Anonymous said...

It wouldnt be totally unfair to fine her but it is unfair to fine that much.

Anonymous said...

wow i really don`t now what to say all i got to say is that they soooo mean

Anonymous said...

I think that she shouldn't be charged , and shouldn't have to pay any money or took to court. She should be ok.

Anonymous said...

it a not good I coes it enfev
the eviermen

Anonymous said...

I don't think that the lady should be fined because it is not fair. Why don't they just shut it down? I mean, a lot of people might think that it is a one in a million chance that they get picked to be sued so they will might keep doing it.

Anonymous said...

I think that it is not fair to only sue one person It is not fair. Others have used that thing too and they aren't in trouble.

Anonymous said...

I think that the people who have the online music stores are being greedy because they won't let you share music with your family.

Anonymous said...

I think that what the music company is wrong because more people are doing what she is doing. They do not need to make her pay for what many people are doing. The company should put a fire wall up around the website so that nobody can get on to the website. Fining that lady will not set an example for other people I think that, that will cause more people to be mad at what they are doing.I think that they should make a site that if you go on any illegal websites they get fined a certain amount of money. I think that, that will stop people from going on illegal websites and not getting caught for doing illegal things in the internet and getting other people in trouble for your own actions. They should just fine the maker of the website instead of fining someone for something that everyone did. If I was getting fined for illegal things and I didn't do it I would get very mad. I think that they should come at the situation a different way instead of puling random people out of a big crowed. It would be like pulling one person out of a huge crowd to be killed because someone robbed the bank. I think that this whole matter should just go away. Sooner of later someone is going to fine the person who made the website. I agree with Christian the girl should not get fined for something that she did not do. We should end the matter and never come back to it again.

Anonymous said...

I also think the people who made this programs should be sued. The have not even get sued!!

Anonymous said...

What we should do about the illegal music programs is shut them down permently.

Anonymous said...

I do not want to sound mean or anything. But I think that she deserves paying more than $200 because it was kind of her fault that she did not know this information and she copyrighted songs. She should have known and been aware that copyrighting songs are illegal. Even though I feel bad for her, we should at least sue all of those virus and illegal programs around the world.

Anonymous said...

I don't think that the lady should get fined! I think that the people who put up the website should get fined! I think that those websites get innocent people into big trouble because they want to listen to music!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Brandon that the company should be sued, but so should she. It was her decision in the first place, but I really don't get why the fine is so high. I was her first offense, right? She's not the only one doing it, either, so what are they going to do, find EVERYONE that downloads illegally??? I don't think so. It's just like a weed -- you want it gone? Pull it out by the roots.

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Kieth I was thinking why would they put down loading sites on the internet if it's illegal?

Anonymous said...

Also, the goverment should donate at least s1000 to charity so people can have a good home.

Anonymous said...

it is bad to share music files online and with other people

Anonymous said...

I think that they should let people music file share!

Anonymous said...

The people that have downloaded music files probably won't get fined, some will be fined for huge amounts of money. The people who have downloaded illegal music files won't be found around the world, but maybe half of them will be found and fined.

Anonymous said...

I think its very unfair because other people also do this and still but they don't have to pay a fine.

Anonymous said...

I think that the girl should not have to pay the fine.

Anonymous said...

So many people download music illegally and for that one person to get fined isn't right. If your going to fine one person that might be doing something illegal you should at least fine the other people that are doing the same exact thing as she was.

Anonymous said...

I think its unfair because other people do the same thing but they don't pay.

Anonymous said...

I read the music one

Anonymous said...

Just one person getting fined for something that lots of do is totally wrong so why not just give her a warning and a smaller fine so that she won't want to share music again.

Anonymous said...

I think you shod be abl to shar music with tour friends

i think that you should be allowed to share music files with other people because what if they are looking for the same song and they couldn't find it and you have it!! what would you do in that situation?? i know i would just share with the person and say who cares if it is right or wrong to share music files!
