Teddy Bear Teacher

What is your opinion about the recent incident involving the British teacher who allowed her class of 7 year olds in Sudan to name a teddy bear Mohammed? Do you think she should have been put in jail for this? Why or why not? What do you think about her punishment? She was pardoned and now has been deported back to England. Do you think this is the right thing to do? How would you feel if someone insulted your religion? Please respond to these questions in a thoughtful blog entry. 10 points

  1. I think that it is unfair that she should be punished for something so little like that!

  2. I don't think that the teacher should have been in jail for 15 days beacause she was new and she wasn't trying to offend anybpdy or the country.

  3. I also think that she should've researched the county's beleifs and religions before she decided to do that particular project and name the teddy bear that particular name.

  4. Well... I don't know why she was in Sudan in the first place... let alone why would she want to teach? But it's an honest mistake that anyone form another country can make without knowing.

  5. Also she wasn't local and she had no idea that it was the law and she never was trying to offend any body! Also the kids were naming the teddy bear not her and when she told them to vote on a name that is what they voted on! It is not fair that she has to be punished just because a secretary was angry with the school and took it out on her so the school would close down!

  7. What i think about the teddy bear that was named 'Mummhmad' i think that the teacher shouldn't have gone jail because that wasn't really the right thing to do. I would just have gone back to the place that she came from London and never come back well thats what she has to do anyway.

  8. Zoe, I think that it would have been smart to research about that place before she got a job or moved there.

  9. I don't think they should have put her in jail for that. Personally I think that when they found out that one of the staff members that had been fired was trying to get even, they should have charged her. But, it does go both ways, because the teacher should have known that it was offensive to the country when you name something "Muhammed". But, if they were only naming it after the most popular kid in class, it should have been no big deal.

  10. It was an honest mistake she made as a teacher, but I think that she should have done a little bit of research about Sudan before she started teaching. 15 days in jail did seem pretty fair compared to 40 lashes.

  12. I'm confuzzled a little about the whole thing

I'm not too sure what to say about the subject...

I think she shouldn't of had jail time.. I think it's a strange thing to make such a big deal about. Jail time? 40 lashes? That's harsh...

  13. I think that the Teddy Bear Teacher should be able to stay in the Sudan because she didnt really know what she was doing. The person who told on her should be sent to a different country becasue she was just wanting to get back at the school. I understand that some people would be mad but the teacher didnt really know what she was doing. It was also the childrens choice. So they should didnt all just be mad at the teacher.

  16. I definitely think that less then 15 days in jail was waaaaay more fair then 40 lashes or even EXECUTION! I don't think that it was fair for her to be banned from Sudan for forever though

  17. I think that the woman should have researched the country's belief and religion and the way that the people of Sudan lived, because if she knew that it wasn't supposed to be that name and then she did it she would have known the punishment for that then. But still the woman shouldn't have been sentenced to 15 days in jail, but luckily she was only in jail for 5 or 6 days. She shouldn't have to leave the country because if she does then she won't have time to research the country's culture, it would be easier to stay in the country to earn the culture because she could get help from some of the local people if they still want to help her.

  18. I don't think that is was fair that she was going to get jailed. If you can name a person that why can you not name anything else that?

  19. I think that the teacher should not be punished for her actions, because she was new to the country and didn't know about their laws. If she did it again, then she should be punished.

  22. I think that the teacher should not have been punished for what she did not know because dont even think its that big of deal because they were naming it after a student any ways.

  23. I think that the punishment she was given was fair because it was against their law and when you are somewhere else you need to follow their rules. Like if you were at someone else's house you need to follow their rules.

  25. I think that the woman shouldn't have gotten punished, I think that the kids who named the teddy bear should get punished. Just because the teacher had the idea of naming the teddy bear doesn't mean she should get in trouble because the kids came up with the idea of naming the bear Mohammed.

  26. I think that the it is not right that she was punished for that little bear name. She was NOT aware of what would have happened to her and any one else. I think that she should be able to do her job.

  27. I feel bad for the teacher. She didn't know the law against her actions.
